Prospective Timeline for Students Interested in Going on a Rotation Abroad: 1st Year:
Become informed about global health issues
If you are interested in expanding your involvement in global health activities on campus join the PCOM Global Health Initiative
Go on the PCOM Service Trip during the summer between 1st and 2nd year
Start saving money for your rotation
2nd Year:
Continue to learn about issues in global health
Attend global health related events and conferences
Begin to think about rotations abroad and start doing research on where you would want to go
Start to think about how you would fit a rotation abroad into your schedule
Look at J/S groups that have electives when you would want to take your trip
Save money for your rotation and start to look into possible scholarships and grants
3rd Year:
Continue to learn about issues in global health
Save money for your rotation
Note: While it is possible to do a rotation during your 3rd year it is recommended to wait until your 4th year during elective rotations. During 3rd year most students will be busy completing core rotations and planning audition rotations. Hence, it would be difficult to fit in an elective abroad rotation.
4th Year:
9 months prior to intended trip decide where you would like to travel
6-9 months before you want to leave apply to organizations or coordinate with a possible site
Once you decide on a site or are accepted by an organization submit the clerkship registration forms to the clinical education office
6 months before look into buying your plane ticket
3-6 months get vaccinations and read about the country you will be traveling to
1-2 months get prophylaxis medications (malaria, traveler’s diarrhea, etc.) and arrival/lodging logistics.
What Forms do you need to Turn in: Please ensure that you submit the clerkship registration form to the clinical education office at least one month before you leave for your rotation abroad. You can find the form under the M3/M4 tab on Nucleus. As advised by the clinical education office, it is ideal to submit your information as soon as you are accepted to a rotation through an approved organization.
If the international rotation is one that is NOT through an approved organization, please submit information regarding the rotation ASAP so that the Office of Clinical Education can work to obtain approval for the site.
